Spencer is just repeating what enemies of islam has been saying from centuries ago , what did that change in islam?
Spencer is doing nothing but wasting his time!! did not he read this? "They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, and Allah will not consent save to perfect His light, though the unbelievers are averse." 9-32 "

I read Mr. Aslan's book and your review of it is extraordinary. Praise to you for your hard work.

Good analysis and refutation, kamala. May I suggest though removing some of the exclamation marks?
I'm at present working with two earlier books, one by Aslan "No god But God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam" (2006) and "People Like Us: How arrogance is dividing Islam and the West" (2007) by Waleed Aly, an Muslim Australian academic. If one reads these two personal testimonies against the background say of Efraim Karsh's "Islamic Imperialism: A History" (updated edn., 2007) it's as if they're discussing entirely different religions and their accompanying politics. The two former authors both display the same arrogance in their dismissal of books "with histrionic titles", singling out for example Robert Spencer's "The Truth About Mohammed, Founder of the Worlds Most Intolerant Religion" and including presumably Karsh's work, which is sober, accurate and fully annotated and grounded in scholarship. Both Aly and Aslan approve of, and are mutually approved, by John Esposito at Georgetown University, author of "Unholy War". Martin Kramer (martinkramer.org) is a well-founded and informed critic of Esposito's Saudi-funded Centre for Muslim-Christian Understanding. (Presumably the Jews are already well understood.) In sum, you hit the nail on the head by saying that Muslim apologists such as these must either be ignorant or deceptive - or both. I presume you've not received any answers to the questions you posed for the author of The Muslim Next Door?

Since "no one is smarter than their criteria," what is yours? Name them. How do you define 'human?' Does it matter? How many choices does the average Muslim make every day? Does it matter? Why?

If you want a book about Islam, you should get one from a scholar not a bigot and a certified idiot like Spencer who knows nothing about islam.

[apologies if this is a repeat posting]
An excellent, well-written piece - an expose, you might say, of the irony and duplicitous/ignorant meaning behind the book. This is reflected in the newly-demonstrated irony of the approbation on the front cover which speaks in passing of "exposure to the Other" as a remedy for fear and ignorance. Well, just change the proposition "to" to "of" and you have a neat subtitle. Thanks for this good work, and I look forward to reading more from this site.

But I doubt either Ms. Ali-Karamali or the other experts you challenged will respond. There is an agenda, pushed by certain Islamic organizations as well as some of the mainstream media (the BBC, the New York Times, among others) to whitewash the beliefs and history of Islam. Their motives may be nefarious, and they may be well-meaning. Either way, they don't serve anyone who wants to understand Islam, and the threats it has posed to the rest of the world since its inception.

islam is terror...you muslims are continually defending your 'religion' while others are peacfully going about practicing theirs...do u ever get the impresion that islam is indefensible that mohamad was a criminal? And the crimes and horrid things that he did really just show that he was a messenger of satan...yes islam does equal terror misery and violence and the quicker we rid the world of this 'religion' the sooner we can all live in peace.

It really is important, as this reviewer does, to contrast various biographies of such controversial icons. There is so much disinformation out there about Muhammad. I would also recommend the biography at http://www.prophetofdoom.net/ .

it looks like women in Islam have very few rights and are basically the property of their fathers or their husbands to be kept barefoot pregnant and in the kitchen in Saudi Arabia they are not even allowed to drive Muslims claim because women in Islam where the burqa and are kept in their homes unless there is a male relative to go out with that the status of women in Islam is higher than it is in the Westbecause they're protected but in the West woman can walk down a street naked in a parade and not worry about being raped try that in any Islamic country they can drive work where they want to marry who they want and do not need to be protected from every male that walks by so which society really elevates the status of women! I will give you a hint it sure that heck is not a Muslim society there mired back in the seventh century

well the problem is that only Muslims are guaranteed human rights if you look in the Koran and do some reading you'll find infidels because they have not accepted allha and his pet pervert sorry profit Mohammed are considered to be damned souls and not considered to be fully human but subhuman until such time as they become Muslims and this is very carefully not mention one thing Muslims are good at is only telling part of the truth and screaming blue murder when someone points out what the entire statement from the Koran says

Muslims are often claiming Islam is being misunderstood and those that say it's a violent religion that has a believe that it is destined to control the entire world with all religions not be equal to it and anyone that does not become a Muslim in fair person of the book i.e. Jewish or Christian must pay jizha and live as a subdued person a dhimmi in other words a second-class citizen with no rights the fact is anyone that reads about Islam very quickly learns that is in fact an entire political economic and religious system very similar to what a cult is. So Islam is not really misunderstood Muslims are allowed to lie about Islam to if infidels and they keep claiming that Islam for bids the killing of any innocent person but a Muslim eyes according to the Koran and on that infidels if they have not accepted àllha and his pedophile prophet Mohammed they are not considered to be innocent is a very carefully not mentioned when Muslims protest about Islam being misunderstood among those of us who do read we understand too well the danger to the west from Wahhabi-ism and other fundamentalist sects of Islam posed to the west a good example of how Muslims lie is the so-called Palestinian people they have no right to the land they claim and in fact the entire Palestinian crisis was fabricated by the Arab League nationsand these people were kept as refugees as a weapon to be used again as the sovereign state of Israel simply because Muslims have a belif that Islam must dominate and not be dominated and Muslims just cannot stand the idea of jews and their faith being the dominant religion in land that one time Muslims overran

The so called muslim moderates are a dangerous lot, for they perpetuate disinformation about islam either wilfully or innocently. This is fine when the number of muslims is small and the non-muslims are happy to hear these very reassuring and comforting words. But when the crunch comes and muslims reach a critical mass capable of overpowering the others, these very "moderates" either suffer from amnesia or feign helplessness (probably tinged with admiration and a sense of camaraderie for their own brothers) in face of the hijackers of the religion of peace. Shades of The Carpenter and the Walrus:
"O Oysters, come and walk with us!" The Walrus did beseech. "A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk, Along the briny beach:....... .......... Now if you're ready, Oysters dear, We can begin to feed." "But not on us!" the Oysters cried, Turning a little blue. "After such kindness, that would be A dismal thing to do!" "The night is fine," the Walrus said. "Do you admire the view? "It was so kind of you to come! And you are very nice!" The Carpenter said nothing but "Cut us another slice: I wish you were not quite so deaf-- I've had to ask you twice!" "It seems a shame," the Walrus said, "To play them such a trick, After we've brought them out so far, And made them trot so quick!" The Carpenter said nothing but "The butter's spread too thick!" In Indian Kashmir, the entire population of Hindus - probably half a million people - were driven out of the state after 1989, when the muslims there felt they could get away with it, given the mujahideen fire power freed up from Afghanistan and the Indian government's complete lack of understanding of Islam thanks to propaganda similar to that in the Posters cited here. The population of Hindus in Pakistan came down from over 10% in 1947 to 2.5% in the last census. The story goes on in every muslim country or countries where muslims have been permitted to thrive at the cost of the natives.

This is nice work in exposing the double-talk in these posters. Some typos: For the verses about the boiling fluids, you have typed sura 9 instead of 22 (though you do have the correct links).
